Squid Game" Meets "russian ship": Innovative Approaches to Militarizing Mass Sports and Activities

Yesterday, the Verkhovna Rada finally passed the law on basic general military training (BGMT) for citizens aged 18 and over, which is critically necessary for implementing the "National Resistance Fundamentals" law.

However, there's one major "BUT" — the state hardly finances either the centers for resistance training or the BGMT programs.

Additionally, the state's disastrous policies regarding the motivation and involvement of youth and civilians in the Armed Forces and national resistance continue to worsen.

But the "Muromets National Resistance Training Center" team, together with the Ukrainian Sports Committee and ExpoPark, found an extremely effective solution based on new global trends popular among youth. For effective preparation for national resistance, new innovative, applied forms of activity and sports integrated with BGMT have taken the lead.

The "Muromets National Resistance Training Center" and the Ukrainian Sports Committee have long utilized attractive quasi-military sports like laser tag, airsoft, paintball, car, aqua, and aircraft modeling sports, shooting ranges, obstacle courses, diving, and more for preparing defenders.

But we've acquired the most remarkable experience, unique not only for Ukraine but for the world, in completely innovative directions of quasi-military activities that have made the militarization of society highly appealing. The best example of ideological militarization of American society and youth recruitment into the military was through Sylvester Stallone's blockbusters "Commando," "Mission: Impossible," "Top Gun," and others. Recruitment offices were set up directly in movie theaters, where queues of eager volunteers formed. The Murovets National Resistance Team analyzed this effective experience.

For example, the hit series "Squid Game," which became the number one show on Netflix in 2025, is an extremely intense and violent show that gained massive popularity among youth and the general public. The Murovets National Resistance Center team integrated it with drone technologies, which are crucial on the front lines, and created competition rules that immediately gained tremendous popularity.

The concept of the competition is simple — two teams are formed: hunters and escapees. The players of the first team must escape from a drone, while the second team tries to hit them with a drop. It’s like an updated version of drone paintball. Then the teams switch roles. Naturally, the team that manages to score the most hits and avoid the drones the longest wins. Young people acquire perfect skills in drone control while targeting moving objects, as well as in evading attacks. But the most important part is that this has become the key appealing feature for national resistance training. Residents no longer fear military activities; on the contrary, they’re eager to participate, forming long lines as "hunters" and "escapees." There’s a constant influx of people wanting to try it.

When we started doing the "Squid Game" on the military obstacle course, on the airsoft field, and later at the Morzhfest, where participants had to run across an improvised ice field, the video online gained 150,000 views in just two days.

This is a great indicator of the popularization of militarization in society and the involvement of pre-conscription youth. In fact, the media resonance from selfies and videos of participants on social networks like Instagram and TikTok has become even more popular compared to our wakeboarding competitions. This military content has gone viral and become a huge trend, which is excellent for the militarization of children and youth.

This is the effective tool of innovative quasi-military sports and physical activity. During the drone competitions, amazing discoveries were made — for example, girls and even grandmothers perform far better at hitting targets than boys. Their finger motor skills for precise drone control are nearly three times more effective (embroidery and knitting clearly have their advantages). Perhaps platoons of female drone pilots might be more effective than those of men.

Other competitions, like "Russian ship, go f**k yourself," are no less viral and captivating. These involve training and competitions related to targeting moving and stationary watercraft. There are also versions of attacks on moving land targets and trenches at the drone range. This lighter version has become incredibly popular with children, girls, and even pensioners.

There are many other interesting ideas at the Muromets National Resistance Center, but they are currently used in small-scale sessions with only 10-20 participants. However, the country needs hundreds and thousands of participants, including in universities, schools, and among those in protected categories. The state must immediately allocate funds and scale up this positive experience nationwide.

Of course, at the Muromets National Resistance Center, we hold competitions in many other innovative areas — aerial reconnaissance, navigation, demining, drone simulators, F-16, SU-27, MiG-29 simulators, pedestrian military quest routes (FreeGen GO), interactive shooting ranges, Javelins, shooting down Shaheds, canine training, and more. We involve children's camps, pre-conscription youth, local residents, veterans, the wounded, and pensioners, but this is just a drop in the ocean. Even for the Desniansky district, the participation rate should not be 60 people per month but at least 2,000 (in a district of 400,000 residents, approximately 250,000 people should undergo resistance training). For that, the center would need 125 months just to cover that number.

Therefore, national resistance platforms should replicate our experience across all schools, universities, and in industrial and government institutions.

There are no such innovative military-applied sports anywhere in the world, and the Ukrainian Sports Committee has the potential to become a trendsetter for a new generation of attractive quasi-military sports. It could even create a global federation for this new type of sport.

We plan to set up a working group within the Ukrainian Sports Committee to implement these innovative military-applied sports, develop a program, secure funding, and hold regular competitions and training sessions. Initially, we will base this on the existing flagship infrastructure of the Muromets National Resistance Center, refining the concept and working toward the global scaling of such sports across all of Ukraine.
